Kata Beach

Kata Beach in Phuket, Thailand

Kata Beach or Kata Yai Beach is the northernmost and biggest of the two Kata Beaches. Yai means big, as opposed to Kata Noi Beach Little Kata Beach. The palm-lined Kata Beach is arguably one of the nicest beaches in Phuket, with a wide strip of soft sand and rolling surf. The fact that the sea is shallow for a long way out makes it very safe for non-swimmers and therefore Kata Beach is very popular among families with small children.

The beautiful Kata Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Phuket

Kata Beach, located just south of Karon Beach, is very scenic and offers two kilometers of white sand beach fringed by shady trees. Flanked by lush green hills which separate it from the other west coast beaches, Kata Beach retains a laid back feel. At the northern point of Kata Beach there is a lively coral reef that goes out to Pu Island, making it a popular snorkeling spot. Mask and fins can be rented on the beach for about 100 baht.

The southern end of Kata Beach is, according to many, the best surfing spot in Phuket. There are boards for hire at Kata Beach, as well as instructors on hand to offer a few tips for beginners. Apart from snorkeling and surfing, Kata Beach offers a great variety of other water sports such as: waterskiing, wakeboarding, parasailing, kayaking, jet-skis and banana boats. Other beach activities include beach soccer and beach volleyball. If you want to try out something less active, there are also a few spots on the beach where you can get a Thai massage. At the end of the year Kata Beach really comes alive, as it plays host to Asia's premier sailing event, the annual King's Cup Regatta, with beautiful yachts from all over the world.

Many restaurants, serving both Thai and western food, can be found along the southern end of Kata Beach. At both the northern and the southern end of the beach road you can find vendors selling food, snacks and cold drinks. At night the dining choices are plenty around Kata Center. You'll find a good variety of restaurants offering cuisines from around the world including Scandinavian, English, Italian and of course Thai, many of them specializing in seafood.

Nightlife in Kata is most active around Kata Center and along the road leading inland from the junction there. With some shopping and quite a few beer bars to be found, the nightlife is still low-key and laid back. If you're up for a long party night, you'd be better off heading over the hills to Patong.
