Rawai Beach

Rawai Beach in Phuket, Thailand

Rawai Beach in southern Phuket, is a departure point for boat trips to surrounding islands

Rawai Beach, located at the southern tip of Phuket, is known for great seafood dining on the seafront and as a departure point for boat trips to surrounding islands. Rawai Beach, with a sweeping bay and lovely island views, is perhaps not the best place for swimming, given the large number of boats just off the coast, but remains a scenic Phuket spot for picnicking.

Rather than swimming, the main attraction of Rawai Beach is the food. The entire beachfront has been turned into a long, open-air restaurant and is very popular with local Thais and expats. Here you get see a bit of the real Thailand and it is interesting to just sit back and watch the seafaring side of Thai life getting on with its business. The seafood market and Sea Gypsy village at the east end of Rawai Beach are an experience and there are lots of places to grab a bite to eat and watch the world breeze by. The food is generally superior and cheaper when compared with places such as Patong Beach and Karon Beach.

Seafood at Rawai Beach in Phuket, Thailand

Rawai Beach is known for great seafood dining

Rawai Beach is the best spot on Phuket for renting either traditional longtail boats or speedboats for trips to the nearby islands such as Koh Lon, Koh Kaew, Koh Aeo, Coral Island and Koh Racha. There is also good snorkeling and diving round Laem Phromthep which is just a short boat ride away. Along the beach are signs advertising the availability of longtails.

The island directly offshore that you can see from Rawai Beach is Ko Bon. The island is home to a beach reserved solely for the guests at the nearby Evason Phuket Resort (which has no beach of its own to speak of). Just west of Rawai Beach is Promthep Cape viewpoint, a small peninsula that has a sensational sunset viewpoint over the ocean beyond.
