Surfing in Phuket

Surfing in Phuket has caught on in popularity over the past few years. The number of local surfers has greatly increased thanks to decent surf conditions and the opening of several places to hire boards. Phuket is Thailand's leading surfing destination with the best surf spots being on the west coast of the island.

Phuket surfshops, equipment rental, surfing lessons

Surfing in Phuket, Thailand

Kata Beach is the main place for renting boards, with about seven rental outlets. You won't have to look far as some of them are right on the beach. Rental rates for surfing equipment start from 150 Baht per hour and 500 Baht per day. The surfshops will brief you about which locations are good for surfing and about local currents and rips. Many surfshops in Phuket also offer private lessons starting from 800 Baht an hour.

Phuket Surfing Season

Phuket Surfing, Thailand

The best time to go surfing in Phuket is during low season, around April to September. The conditions are far better and there are also less people crowding the beaches. The best surfing conditions occur after the monsoon winds have blown for a few days, and then suddenly stop. The swell continues for several days after the wind has died, allowing for some decent breaks.

Phuket's Best Surfspots

All of the breaks are found on Phuket's west coast and are mostly beach breaks, with the occasional reef break. From South to North, the main spots are:

Nai Harn Beach is one of the best surfing spots on Phuket and never gets crowded. Nai Harn Beach gets waves up to three meters high, long rides and occasional barrels.

Kata Noi Beach is another of Phuket's primary surf spots. Winds blow from southeast to northeast and the fast waves can be anything up to two meters high. The best waves are just off the northern headland.

Kata Beach is the best beach for surfing in Phuket. Ideal for beginners, the southern end of this beach is probably the most popular surfing spot on Phuket. The swell usually peaks at about two meters with winds blowing from southwest to northwest. There are boards for hire at Kata Beach, as well as instructors on hand to offer a few tips.

Karon Beach is a little too exposed to develop any good breaks, though the waves can reach up to two meters and there are usually light winds. Best when the waves are big enough to break but not too big to make it close out.

Patong Beach - There are some reasonably fast waves towards the northern end of Patong Beach. Waves are usually less than a couple of meters high. There are usually boards available for hire here.

Kalim Beach is definitely one of the better beaches for surfing in Phuket. Waves usually peak at about three meters, with some unpredictable conditions towards the headland.

Kamala Beach - The best breaks are at the northern end of Kamala Beach with waves of up to three meters. This is a good place for surfing thanks to the stable sandbanks. Wind conditions vary here.

Laem Singh Beach - This tiny little beach has some fast waves that can reach up to three meters. Laem Singh is usually a lot quieter than most of the other beaches, especially during the week.

Surin Beach - There is good surfing at Surin Beach at right end, while the middle has hazardous rock formations. The waves tend to be about two meters high here.

Bang Tao Beach - There are some decent, small waves around the middle of Bang Tao Beach, with the swells becoming larger the farther north you go. Conditions can be unpredictable because the sandbanks aren't stable.

Mai Khao Beach - Surfing conditions around Mai Khao Beach are unpredictable and more often than not there are better swells at the other beaches. Waves peak at two meters.
